Donald Trump is the most unconventional President in our history. His tweets, rallies, verbal battles with journalists, and flaunting of conventional wisdom is unprecedented in political history. That said, when you strip away the candidate and tactics, the reality is that Trump’s core re-election political message is quite conventional: Peace and Prosperity. Trump’s firing of National Security Advisor John Bolton is a signal that he is getting tired of the neocon advisors like Bolton who continue to push a more adventurous Middle Eastern policy and resist his desire to bring the troops home from the 18 year war in Afghanistan. Trump is intent to run as the “peace” candidate, the President who ended the war in Afghanistan, and avoided war with Iran and North Korea. The second prong of the re-election messaging is economic prosperity highlighted by low unemployment, low inflation and fewer people on food stamps. In short, Trump wants to run a Peace and Prosperity campaign, just as Reagan did in 1984. Trump may be an unconventional candidate, but the core message is quite conventional.
