We are starting to see a trend. After a short day of campaigning, Biden’s team calls a “lid” the next morning and announces early in the morning that there will no more public appearances of any kind for the rest of the day. 42 days before the Presidential election? Today, the Biden campaign called it at 9:22 AM. In the last 10 days, Biden has not campaigned on four days. Moreover, even when he does campaign, the events are highly staged affairs with only a handful of attendees plus a few press. For example, on Monday, Biden went to an aluminum factory in Wisconsin where he spoke with a mask on for 25 minutes reading off a teleprompter in front of a handful of employees sitting in chairs with white circles. Why does he speak with his mask on even though he is a good 40 feet away from the small number of people in attendance? Maybe it is a form of virtue signaling. The “crowd” was probably less than 50 people. Outside, there were an equal number of Trump supporters and Biden supporters, actually probably more Trump supporters. In short, this is a very subdued campaign.
To give Biden credit, he actually did an interview with a real reporter on Monday, albeit with a Democratic local reporter. However, when asked whether he would support a plan to pack the Supreme Court with additional left wing Justices if Democrats win the November elections, Biden punted. He answered, “I am not going to answer that question” and went on to claim that doing so would “shift the focus.” He also said that he would not be issuing a list of potential Supreme Court nominees. This is not the strategy of a vibrant candidate. On the contrary, Biden is making Hillary Clinton’s 2016 efforts look strong by comparison.
Meanwhile, Trump’s “Great American Comeback” campaign rallies are in full swing. Tonight, he was in Pittsburgh, PA. Yesterday, he was in Swanton, Ohio. Two days before that, he was in Fayetteville, NC. The Trump rallies are massive: roughly 20,000+ cheering Americans holding signs that read: “Peaceful Protest” “Cops for Trump”. “Women for Trump” “Fill that Seat”. The Trump rallies are like a festival, complete with loud music (Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA, the Village People’s YMCA, and music by Elton John). Trump speaks with vigor, deftly delivering favorite lines to the adoring fans, while hundred of thousands more watch online live. He delivers his remarks for close 2 consecutive hours.
The contrast between Trump and Biden is truly remarkable. While in real life they are only 3 years apart, Biden looks at least 10-15 years older than Trump. Biden is gamely trying to hang on, but Father Time has more than caught up with Biden. In the meantime, we offer some free advice to the Biden campaign: you need to start campaigning everyday if you want to win. At least for now, Trump is out-hustling Biden just as Truman out-hustled Dewey. We suspect that the outcome may be similar.
